Lake Lanier is once again above full pool at 1071.09. Summer full pool is 1071.00.
There has not been a lot of news coming from Lake Lanier other than the level continues to be at full pool or just under. There has not been any details about the talks between the states as a judge has ruled that the negotiations can remain secret. I will post more information as it is released. Go out and enjoy this break from the extremely cold weather.

The water level at Lake Lanier has been bouncing for the past week and it is currently at 1070.47 and rising. The weather at Lake Lanier has been extremely cold with some parts of Lake Lanier completely frozen over. It is very strange seeing ice floating on top of Lake Lanier. The temperatures have been in 20s for the past week causing even the bravest boaters to stay off the water. A judge ruled that any negotiations between the states has the right to stay secret. This has many people concerned including the Upper Chattahoochee River Keepers and the people that operate this website. What are they discussing behind closed doors that is to be kept secret? Sounds much like the federal government holding closed door meeting over OUR health care! Hopefully some information about the possible negotiation will leak out. These meetings are dealing with water source for an entire metropolitan area and the future of Lake Lanier... the least they can do is provide the public details about what is being discussed. I will let you know of any changes or information that is released. For Lake Lanier, 2009 will be remembered as the year that pulled the lake out of a severe drought and raised the water level back to full pool. It has been an exciting year for the water level including several occurrences of storms that raised Lake Lanier several feet at a time. 2009's rainy blessings became too much in September with widespread flooding damaging property and taking lives. The COE has been trying to lower Lake Lanier to below full pool (which is normal for this time of year). Today the water level at Lake Lanier has been dropped below full pool at 1070.98. The COE claims that it needs to drop the lake to 1070 to have room to store future storm runoff without creating erosion problems along the banks of Lake Lanier. The rain is supposedly going to continue throughout the winter months so don't expect to dry out anytime soon. Now is the time to look forward into 2010 with Lake Lanier sitting almost at full pool and the water war between the states continuing to rage. Hopefully this year Lake Lanier will remain at or near full pool and businesses dependent on Lake Lanier will be prosperous. Thank you for your support during the ups and downs of 2009. We are looking forward to keeping you up to date with the latest news about Lake Lanier throughout 2010. |
