Lake Lanier received a deluge of rain last night that has risen the lake 3 inches. The water level at Lake Lanier is currently at 1071.88 and rising with over 6,000 CFS of water pouring into the lake. Heavy rains pelted the region last night along with high winds that brought some trees down near the lake. Meanwhile, the fight for the water that Lake Lanier holds is still ongoing. On December 15th in Montgomery, the tri-state Governors will meet “to discuss the ongoing water dispute between the three states,” as a press release stated. There are not many viable options for Georgia except to come up with an agreement with Alabama and Florida. Georgia was hoping for Congress to step in to help but they are tied up with other major issues. There was also talk of transferring water from other river basins for Atlanta but many cities within Georgia disagree with those plans. Lake Lanier is full for now but it might not be the case when an agreement is drawn up.
Can you believe what is happening? Another rain system is going to dump 1-2 inches of rain within the next 24 hours. This has been one of the wettest periods that I have ever seen in Georgia. The area has already seen 16 inches of rain this Fall and even higher localized amounts. Lake Lanier has has bounced back after the drought and is now over full pool. The COE tried to lower the water level to 1070 by December 1st, however they were unsuccessful due to the weekly storm systems. Currently the water level at Lake Lanier is at 1071.37 and rising. The heavy rains will start impacting the are later today into tonight with some places seeing 3 plus inches of rain. How high will Lake Lanier get in the next 48 hours? Good question! I will post the answer later.
