Lake Lanier has been dropping at a rapid rate.  The water level has now dropped below 1060 to 1059.75, despite cooler temperatures. Lake Lanier has not seen rain in a long time. There is a chance of rain tomorrow but is it is a small chance of rain. Lake Lanier needs more than just a shower to make up for all of the lost water. Climatologists have said that this may be a dry winter for Georgia which in turn spells bad news for Lake Lanier. Lake Lanier is already down at 2009 levels with only a few weeks left in the 2011 hurricane season there is little hope left in getting a tropical system to dump large amounts of water in Lake Lanier.  Be careful if you venture out on Lake Lanier, there are many submerged hazards. The Corps of Engineers has done a really good job of marking submerged hazards but there are many that are not marked.  I'll post another update whenever more information is released about the water levels at Lake Lanier.

Lake Lanier has been dropping steadily the past few months due to a severe drought that is affecting much of the state. The extreme heat is evaporating the water in Lake Lanier faster than water is replenishing the lake.  Currently, the Lake Lanier water level is at 1066.84 which is 4.16 feet below summer full pool.

Rain and cooler days are needed to help pull Lake Lanier from the drought it is currently facing, hopefully relief will come sooner than later.

Lake Lanier is currently at 1071.40 and it looks great.  Severe storms with torrential rainfall have kept the lake high.  The Army Corps of Engineers are able to maintain the lake level even with the releases from Buford Dam.  The lack of dry weather has calmed the news media covering the water war.  A dry Lake Lanier exposing its depths is all but a memory for some.  As the topic of Lake Lanier has cooled during this time of rain, we still need to defend Lake Lanier and this important water source for Atlanta.  The dry weather will return and unless the water war is won, Atlanta could lose access to a vital resource.  One thing is for sure, this is going to be another great year for boating on Lake Lanier. Get out and enjoy the lake!
