The water level at Lake Lanier has started to slip.  The lake is currently 1.29 feet below full pool and falling.  Parts of the Chattahoochee River basin are declared  "abnormally" dry for this time of year.  With all of the rain that happened over the winter and spring months, people are scratching their heads wondering where all the rain has gone.  Only spotty showers have frequented north Georgia over the past month.  With high temperatures, water evaporation has increased along with people watering plants.  How long will Lake Lanier continue to drop and is this the start of another dry period for North Georgia.

A U.S District judge rejected the demands of Florida to release more water from Lake Lanier.  Florida stated that the extra water was needed to keep threatened species alive in Florida's Apalachicola River.

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue said in a statement , `Judge Magnuson`s rejection of Florida`s efforts to seek a judicial decree for higher downstream flows that were not supported by science or the law is a major victory for Georgia.

Perdue added, `Any kind of higher guaranteed flow for Florida would have put a strain on Georgia communities up and down the Chattahoochee River. We always felt the use of the Endangered Species Act was just a ruse to try and wring more water out of Georgia. Judge Magnuson recognized that and issued a common-sense ruling that allows the three states to continue meaningful talks.`

News from Lake Lanier remains quiet after several months of the water level staying around full pool.  No complaints here!  Currently the water level is at 1070.28.

It has been extremely hot around Lake Lanier for the past two weeks.  Temperatures at the lake have ranged from 90+ degrees in the afternoons with high humidity making it feel much hotter.  The lake level has not swayed very much since the Memorial Day weekend with levels staying close to full pool. The current water level is 1070.91.  Late afternoon thunderstorms have helped replenish evaporated water.

There were two deaths reported at Lake Lanier last week.  A girl was flown to Grady Hospital after falling off a tube and ran over by a passing pontoon boat. The pontoon boat swerved to avoid another fallen tuber and did not see the second girl.  The girl later died at Grady.  Two days later a 67 yr old boater jumped off his boat and went under the water.  Divers searched for the body and it was recovered the next day.

These are stark reminders about the dangers of boating and swimming without life jackets.  As the 4th of July is fast approaching, Lake Lanier will become very crowded with people out having a fun time at the lake.  Don’t leave your common sense and life jackets on the dock!  Be courteous and cautious when on Lake Lanier this holiday weekend.  Accidents while boating can happen very quickly so be alert! Have a safe, fun weekend at Lake Lanier.
