Where was the rain LAST YEAR when we needed it? Many people are asking the same question after Sunday’s record rainfall. The next question I get quite often. What did the rain do to the lake level? Well…the answer is, not enough to notice. We need several weeks’ worth of Sunday’s weather to make a noticeable dent in the level of Lake Lanier. Primarily we need the rain to fall in the watershed of the lake. The watershed for Lake Lanier is very small compared to the watershed for Lake Allatoona. Lake Allatoona recovers faster because of the larger watershed.

Lake Lanier claimed the lives of 4 people over the holiday weekend. All four victims drowned. Two of the people were trying to get a pontoon boat off a sandbar near Browns Bridge Road. The boat apparently got snagged on the sand bar due to low water levels at the lake. The other drowning victims were swimming in the lake and came upon sudden drop-offs. The water level has made swimming very dangerous, even in the areas marked for swimming. Across the state there were 25 cases of BUI reported and 14 boating accidents.

It is the 4th of July weekend and many of you are heading to the lake to enjoy your holiday. If you are boating this weekend, please be considerate of others while at the launch ramp, as many ramps do not touch the water. Also the low water level has uncovered many hazards so watch out for stumps and sandbars. Take it easy out there; I don’t want to read about you in the newspaper on July 14th!!! Above all I wish you a safe and happy 4th of July.

How much water do you think the summer sun is evaporating from Lake Lanier? On a hot early June day, the sun evaporated 193.9 million gallons of water. The sun evaporates two tenths of the lake each day. Gwinnett County pulled out an average of 74.2 million gallons per day in May. These numbers are quite staggering to comprehend.

A quick update on the lake... Florida officials are very upset over the the latest Corps water plan. They plan to fight to keep the current water flow into Apalachicola Bay. The current lake level stands at 1057.48 which is 13.52 feet below what it should be this time of year. The extreme heat we are having is also contributing to evaporation.
